PGI: A European Protection

First Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) for salt in Europe.

Since 10/04/12, the PGI protects the names “Sel de Guérande” and “Fleur de Sel de Guérande”, as well as the promotion of the products and the associated know-how. This sign of origin crowns many years of work by the entire profession.

(The PGI is in application 20 days after its publication date of 20/03/12 in the Official Journal of the European Union, i.e. 20/03/12 + 20 days = since 10/04/12!)

Thanks to this PGI, salt workers can guarantee the origin and quality of “Sel de Guérande” and “Fleur de Sel de Guérande” products to their customers and consumers.

APROSELA (Association for the Promotion of Artisanal Salt) was created in 1990 following work by the salt industry to improve the quality of artisanal sea salt from the Guérande basin. The association contributed, with the operators of the salt industry, to obtaining the Label Rouge for artisanal sea salt in 1991, the first official sign of quality and origin obtained for salt.
